Lady Gaga, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, learned piano by the age of 4 and was writing her own songs by 13. She dropped out of New York University at 19 to pursue music full-time, briefly signing with Def Jam Records in 2005. Though she was dropped from the label after just three months, her passion for music didn’t waver. To continue to make a name for herself, she performed in burlesque dance clubs in the Lower East Side of Manhattan — earning the moniker “Gaga” after Queen’s “Radio Ga Ga” from a music producer who compared her vocal talent to the band’s frontman Freddie Mercury. Interscope Records eventually picked her up, and her debut album, The Fame, came out in August 2008. A slew of No. 1 dance hits followed, including “Poker Face,” and Gaga went on to release Born This Way in May 2011, Artpop in November 2013 and Joanne in October 2016. Gaga ventured into acting with 2016’s American Horror Story: Hotel, winning a Golden Globe for the role of Elizabeth. She later hit the big screen alongside Bradley Cooper in his directorial debut, A Star Is Born, in October 2018. For her portrayal of Ally, Gaga won a Critics’ Choice Award and garnered nominations at the Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. The pop star also starred in 2021’s House of Gucci and was cast as Harley Quinn in Todd Phillips’ 2024 film Joker: Folie à Deux. Her 2017 Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two, took viewers behind the scenes of her halftime performance at Super Bowl LI while also providing an unfiltered look at her personal life. Gaga released two collaborative albums with music legend and personal friend Tony Bennett: 2014’s Cheek to Cheek and 2021’s Love for Sale. She released her sixth studio album, Chromatica, in 2020. Gaga is one of the world’s best-selling music artists, racking up 13 Grammy Awards and 18 VMAs through the years. She is an advocate for mental health awareness and LGBTQ+ rights through her nonprofit organization, the Born This Way Foundation. She also launched her vegan cosmetics brand, Haus Labs, in 2019. The multi-hyphenate was previously linked to collaborator Matthew “Dada” Williams and Luc Carl before getting engaged to Taylor Kinney in 2015. The couple split in July 2016 after five years together. She moved on with Christian Carino in February 2017, but they called off their engagement two years later. Gaga was first spotted with boyfriend Michael Polansky in December 2019 before they went Instagram official in February 2020.
